Eating Your Way to Healthy Skin

When we think of skin care, we immediately think of creams, lotions and cleansers, and treatments like facials and skin peels. An equally important component of good skin care—but one that often gets overlooked—is diet. We must understand that what we eat to nourish our skin from within is as important as what we put on our skin or do to it on the outside. A good diet is essential to good health, and that includes skin health.

Here are some food and eating guidelines that are very important in maintaining good skin:

Take enough vitamins A, C and E. These protect the skin from damage caused by the sun and other environmental factors. Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that fight harmful free radicals. Vitamin A maintains and repairs skin tissue. These nutrients are found in carrots, almonds, green leafy vegetables, and fresh fruits.

Remember to hydrate. Drinking water is an easy way to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized. Even if you moisturize diligently, it won’t do much if you are dehydrated.

Take probiotics. Probiotic supplements can improve both your digestion and your skin. Good sources of probiotics are yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso and other fermented foods.

Eat enough omega-3 fatty acids. These can be found in fish such as mackerel and sardines, and from flaxseed and chia seeds.

Eat antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, beans, green leafy vegetables, and purple-colored produce: raspberries, blueberries, potatoes, cabbage and cauliflower. The purple color indicates the presence of an antioxidant called anthocyanin, which improves circulation. Healthy circulation is necessary for the skin to get the nutrients and sustenance it needs.

Stay away from sugary foods. Sugar is like poison to the skin. It ages the skin faster, and makes it prone to wrinkles, inflammation inflammation and other skin problems.

Use curry, turmeric and spices. These are rich in antioxidants.

Reduce your consumption of dairy products. Milk and dairy are linked to pimples and acne. If you decide to forego milk, ensure that you get enough calcium and protein from other sources.

When you follow these guidelines, you will notice great improvements on your skin after just a few days or weeks. These diet tips are also great in improving your overall health, so it is recommended that you make them a permanent part of your eating habits.
